Whether you are tired of your old provider or are just getting into the bandwagon of worldwide connectivity, looking for an internet service provider does not come as easy as most people perceive it to be. Aside from the choice on whether it will be best to get a DSL or cabled internet connection, you will also have to consider other factors to ensure that you get the best deal for your hard-earned cash.
If you already have a good background with the internet, then this should not be that big of a problem. If you are a novice in the realm of modern technology, however, you will need to be extra careful with your choice. There are so many internet service providers out there offering varied services at differing costs. You need to pick out the one that gives you exactly what you need in a price that you can afford.
Here are 5 helpful tips to keep in mind.
- Make a list of the reasons why you need the internet. If you are only after the bare essentials that go along with it such as sending and receiving emails, chatting, and surfing the internet; it would probably be good enough a choose the simplest type of internet service. If you are after video streaming and all similar activities, you will need a service that offers a higher connection speed.
- Perform some research on your own. Aside from actually connecting you to the internet, there are internet providers that provide added fancy features to make the entire experience a little more manageable and easier. Pay close attention to the payment plans that they offer as there are those that might charge you a little higher than all the others.
- Determine the amount of time that you will use the internet. If you intend to use it for only a couple of hours a day, an expensive monthly subscription might not be the best thing for you. Perhaps you would get the best value for your money if you opt for a prepaid connection or a plan that only allows you to surf for a limited number of hours daily.
- Assess their customer service. Even when you are still making queries, proper treatment and courtesy from their employees can give you a good idea on how they will handle any questions or problems that you might have in the future.
- Grab opportunities for free internet connection. Anyone who is currently subscribed to internet service providers are allowed to use America Online (AOL) without any charge. You can also get free downloads of virus scanner as well as pop-up and spam blocker software.
It would be rather risky to subscribe in the first internet service provider that you come across that you barely know anything about. Remember that speed does not merely dictate how good of a deal you are getting into. You need to do your homework and know what each provider has to offer to their clients.

Well, here in India we actually do not have much of a choice as almost all service providers have similar plans. But yeah I’ve chosen MTNL..it available in almost all parts of my city. So, Kudos for that haha…

I think the first point is the most important one and majority of users fall into that category as well. Broadband companies are making a big deal out of connection speeds when most don’t really need those high level of speed.

I don’t know if a lot of people actually have much of a choice when it comes to choosing an Internet provider. For most places in the United States and Canada, you either have one or two choices, tops. I know that a lot of people do consider satellite be an option, but it tends to be very expensive.
My experiences always been that cable is just a lot better than DSL. That may have changed, however.

Point #2 is pretty important. Unfortunately where I live you only have a choice between two ISPs and one is miles ahead of the other.

You made a good point when you said that I should assess the customer service of the internet provider I plan on choosing to ensure they could help me with any problems that may arise in the future. My husband and I plan on opening a bed and breakfast motel on the outskirts of our town. We plan on having an internet connection installed in our motel to increase our appeal to customers, so thanks for the tips.
