With the Blender Project, a free and open source 3D animation rendering software suite is available as freeware for everyone to download. The Blender software can create animations, graphical and visual effects, render 3D models as well as interacted 3D video games and apps. Professional features such as 3D modeling, texturing and skinning are included. Even complex water simulation for fluid and smoke animation are built-in. The integrated game engine offers further details to develop and create 3D animated objects, landscapes and environments.

Developed as an internal application by the Dutch animation studio Neo Geo together with NaN Technologies, the Blender project was licensed unter the GNU public license in 2002. Since then, several teams extended the open-source software by implementing new features periodically. Blender software is used by students worldwide to create fancy animated 3D films and video games. Famous creations are “Big Buck Bunny” and “Elephants Dream” which have been designed using Blender 3D and a personal computer.
