Window 8: Changing the Priority of Wireless Networks

In windows 8, the user can’t directly prioritize between different wireless networks or between wireless network and a lane connection. It is because the windows 8, lacks any direst wireless profile manager. This wireless profile manager is present in the windows 7 and lets us to change the wireless network’s priority manually or automatically.

How to check the Profiles of the Networks?

In the latest features of windows 8, there is no direct profile manager system. One can’t also see the list of networks directly. For this purpose, one needs to use the command prompt. In other words, to see the list of profiles of the networks, the command prompt is used.

windows has a network application layer that manages different wireless profiles with Windows 7 and Win 8 Wlan guide

Use of the Command Prompt in Checking the Networks

No graphic user interface is used in this. One can make use of the third part tool settings. Simply, the command prompt is entered first to see the list of all the networks. Following command can be used for this purpose:

“Netsh wlan show profiles”

A window is opened and one can see the list of the networks on the system. It will show you the networks which you have to select for priority. Again, the networks are prioritized by using the command prompt. No complicated settings are needed to do. Only make use of a command and windows will succefully configure your desired network as the automatic priority. The name of the network will be included in the command you are using. The whole method is mentioned below:

Alternative of the Wireless Profile Manager in Windows 8

Although, there are no direct tools present in the windows 8 to change the selection of the desired wireless networks, but the alternatives of such profile managers are present. This alternative is in the form of other tools which are used from other programs, but what is more important is the interest of the user in knowing about any direct and convenient way which lets him to prioritize the networks easily.

There is the simplest way depending upon the way of the user. If you are using any network as the first priority and suddenly switch to another one, then which is marked with the check of the auto connect, you will be automatically connected to your prioritize networks through the windows 8. Actually, the second network selection on which you are switched later automatically comes on the top of the list of the networks. In future windows connect your system with this network without being asked.

Changing the Priority by Using a Command Prompt

Alternatively, the network selection of the windows 8 can also be changed by using the command prompt. For this purpose, a list of all the networks of windows is seen first. This can be done by using a command. For example, one can see a command prompt by using the command of “netsh wlan show profiles.” After this command, you need to know two more things, one is the name of the GUI and the other is the name of the network you are going to prioritize.

Just use the above mentioned command prompt and then the desired output will appear on the screen. After knowing the name of the desired GUI and the network you want to adjust on the top selection, you have to use another command. This command is in the form of:

“netsh wlan set profileorder name=”SSID name” interface=”WiFi” priority=1”

The above mentioned command is not used as it is. Here, the word SSID is replaced with the network and WiFi is replaced with the name of the network interface. It is the simplest way to change the priority of the network in the windows 8. After using this command prompt method, the selected network name comes on the top and becomes the first priority of the windows while connecting to the internet.

After selecting your desired network, you can close the window or exit it by pressing the enter key. To see the output of your settings, just see the profile manager and check the name of the desired network marked as automatic. How the window is appeared on applying the command prompt can be found by using the various sites like www.testinternetspeed.info.
