Google Now: an analysis of the source code announces new features

Source code in Google Now suggests that the application could soon welcome third-party services, and so provide voice notifications for any application “compatible”. If you are a fan of the integrated digital assistant to Android and iOS app on Google, it seems that you will have many new features to expect in 2015.

Potential improvements have been discovered through the excavations of the Android Police team in the source code of the application. A new “3rd Party Welcome” section, as well as icons covering topics such as health, food or music, suggests that Google Now will finally be opened to selected partners, and alongside the official Google applications . Yet it is still early to tell, and Android Police has warned users not to expect to see them happen anytime soon.

Voice notification features seem more likely to be implemented in the near future. The voice feature has already played a key role in the Android platform and Google applications, but the new framework would allow notifications to be read aloud as they arrive, without any interaction necessary. In other words, it could be extremely useful if you are driving. Again, this could be just an experimental movement on the part of Google, but it shows what Google has in mind.

A new set of icons suggests that sharing on social networks could be on the cards. There are also signs of closer integration between Chrome and Android.

Google Now is still a vital part of Google’s strategy – which is why it is available on iOS and Android – and Siri and Cortana is on its heels, the Mountain View company will have at heart to keep pushing development as quickly as possible. This year’s Google I / O would be a good bet to hear official announcements.
