One of the leisurely activities for me on my phone is to read books. I generally read a lot of non-fiction and I find it convenient to read them on phone since I can carry my book anywhere I want. But the experience of reading the eBooks on the phone depends to a great extent on apps used. The ebooks come in various formats like PDF, ePUB, etc.
Reading them in the default file reader applications for these respective file types make it difficult to have a book reading experience. For example you cannot flip through the pages or you cannot bookmark them. To address these issues, we look at various popular reading apps available on Android.
Aldiko
This is one of the most popular reading app out there. It has gone refreshingly smooth user interface with many customizable elements. You can change margin, alignment, color of the background etc. It also lets you bookmark the pages. This is a must have app for any book lover. It supports most common formats like pdf and epub. Also supports the ability to import the books to the reader’s library. It has got a premium version that is without advertisements.
Amazon Kindle
One of the problems with physical books is that you need to shell out extra money to buy them as compared to digital books. To solve this issue, install kindle. Almost all popular fiction and non-fiction books out there are available on kindle for purchase or free download. Kindle goes beyond this and allows you to download the books from other devices and PC and read them on your mobile devices. It has got some customizations like font size, background color, orientation etc. but it is not as great on UI as aldiko.
MoonReader
This is another app with interesting combination of UI and features. It supports some of the less popular features like translation in 40 languages. You can back up your ebook on dropbox. It has good collection of themes. One unique feature is “Keep my eyes health” option that adjusts screen brightness, font size and background color for long-time reading. It support comprehensive list of ebook file formats like txt, html, epub, mobi, umd, fb2, chm, cbr, cbz, rar, zip and OPDS. Premium version is also available which supports more PDF functions.
FBReader
This is a simple app without a fancy UI and bare minimum feature. This is a great app if you generally read book in standard format and you want a minimalistic user interface. It is fast and has some options to customize the experience. It is smooth to use and you will not want to use any other complicated reader once you get used to this one.
Audible
If you are busy person and get a lot of free time while driving, you can make use of this app to make the most of that time. This apps provides you access to over 1,00,000 audible editions of various ebooks. You can download the files and transfer them to other devices. You can also read or see images while you are listening to the book. A unique feature is that it lets you earn badges and points based on your reading habits.
CoolReader
This app is from a free and open source project. It is similar to FB reader. It has some cool paper turning animation. The big limitation is that it does not support pdf in standard format. You can add additional fonts if you want. Text to speech is another cool option.
