FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, in May 2014, released a proposal in which he allowed companies such as Verizon, Comcast and AT&T to differentiate online and generate pay-to-play fast lanes.
What has happened?
Millions of people came on the road and spoke out against this plan.
And the local people win the case and Wheeler has taken the proposal back and later on February 15th, 2015 he announced that he would apply fresh Net Neutrality rules and regulations on Title II of the Communications Act, that state that the Internet users have the strongest protections.
The FCC on Feb. 26, 2015. Approved the plan of the Wheeler. This is no doubt a big victory for local people who came out on the roads and fought to protect the open Internet.
Net neutrality
This in simple words is the guiding principle of the Internet. Net neutrality conserves once right to communicate freely online.
Net neutrality is an Internet that protects and enables free speech. It in simple words means that you will get an open network from your Internet service provider – and there will be no discrimination or block against any content or applications that ride over that specific network. Just like there is no limit to call or talk on the mobile phone, your Internet service provider should not be concerned what you post or view online; you are free to post and view anything.
What was FCC ordered for “Open Internet Order”
In 2010, the FCC was proposed to stop broadband ISPs from interfering or blocking with traffic on the Internet. The open Internet order is designed to make the Internet usable for all – that order they named “Net neutrality”.
In 2014, January, the court ordered the FCC to use a dubious legal outline to craft the Open Internet Order and that they do not have the right to enforce and implement those rules.
