As the anticipation mounts about the latest Windows Phone 8 (WP8) devices that will be announced at the Nokia World Conference shortly, here is a look at what could possibly be in store. There are strong indications that Nokia will be doing a double unveiling, introducing the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 models.
The high-end 920 is believed to be replacing the previous flagship phone, Nokia Lumia 900. The Lumia 920 is expected to have a processing speed of 1.5 Ghz, RAM at 1 GB and 32GB of internal memory. The Nokia Lumia 920 HD display screen will measure 4.5 inches. Both storage specifications have doubled as compared to its predecessor, a microSD card slot has been introduced for additional memory and the screen size is bigger. It will be equipped with an NFC chip and 4G LTE connectivity. It is also touted to have the PureView camera that made the Nokia 808 PureView so popular. Lumia 920’s 8 MP resolution, while not comparable to Nokia 808’s 41 MP, is still impressive with image stabilization and sophisticated camera software. Besides, it will have a 1.3 megapixel (MP) front-facing camera for video calling over the internet.
The mid-range Nokia Lumia 820 goes by the code name Nokia Arrow; its specs make it the younger brother of the Nokia Lumia 920. This WP8 device is likely to have a 1.5 Ghz dual-core processor, 1 GB RAM and same front-facing camera as Lumia 920. Where it does not keep up is a smaller display of 4.3 inches and 8 GB storage, although the microSD card slot is provided here as well.
While the specs of the two phones have been sourced from The Verge, some images of the physical body have been leaked on a Twitter account going by the name of @evleaks. If these images are reliable, Lumia 820 will be available in a wide range of bright colors, with the back cover replaceable, like the Lumia 710. Lumia 920 is also expected to have at least 3 color options. An image of a USB-powered “wireless” charging pad for these WP8 devices has also been doing the rounds. It will use contact induction Qi charging technology, thereby making both the new models compatible with Qi charging pads of other brands as well.
All these rumors will be laid to rest shortly and we can directly compare the Lumia 920 / 820 specs with the other WP8 devices entering the market; Samsung has just announced the Ativ S, while HTC OneX is expected soon. Through the WP8, Microsoft aims to put up a good fight with the iOS and Android operating systems that have dominated the smartphone market until now. Nokia are collaborating with Microsoft on this launch, since the WP8 has high compatibility with the Windows 8 platform, both of which are being launched end-October.
The Nokia Lumia 920 / 820 promise to be better than the Android-based Samsung Galaxy SIII; although the latter has a bigger 4.8 inch display, it falls behind in its 1.4 GHz processing power. These latest Nokia models will also be up against the iPhone 5 that is backed by the stability of the iOS platform. It is due before November and is rumored to have a 4-inch display and lower CPU speed than the Nokia models. The 8 MP camera is common to all these devices. Lumia 920 and 820 are expected to hit the market only by the end of October or even possibly November. Most likely priced at $99 and $49 respectively, they promise exciting times ahead.
