Amritsar is a city of tradition and culture, located in the very northern part of India. Because of its past, there are many religious centers and historical places to visit when travelling to North India. Amritsar is known as Jewel of Punjab. Here is the list of the places to visit:
Golden temple (Harmandir Sahib)
It is one of the most sacred temple for Sikhs and fully made from gold having great architecture and religious scriptures. Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru of Sikhs had started to build a pool here which right now houses the Temple. It is the famous temple of Sikhism. The Granth Sahib is kept inside the Temple during day time and at night it is placed in the Akal Takht or in gurudwara. The Akal Takht contains the ancient weapons used by the Sikh Gurus and warriors.
Wagah Border
Wagah is the road border crossing between Pakistan and India between Amriitsar and Lahore cities. Wagah is also called as “Wagha” in lahore, Pakistan. It has become famous for the beating the ceremony which includes the shutting of international gates and the lowering of the flags of both India and Pakistan. Around 5000 people visit this place everyday, which make it very popular among tourists around the world. Soldiers from both, India and Pakistan march in discipline drill, going through the march pass of bringing down their respective national flags. As the sun sinks, nationalistic intensity of belief rises and lights gets switched on by the end of the day with thunderous applause.
Jallian Wala Bagh
The memorial at this site shows the 2000 sikhs who were killed or wounded, shot without any reason by the British under the order of Gen Michael O”Dyer on April13, 1919 while attending a peaceful public meeting. The story of this bad massacre is spoke in the Martyr’s Gallery at the place. A part of wall with bullet spots which is still saved along with the memorial well, in which some people tried and jumped to save their lives.
If you are travelling by Air then Wagah Border is 35 KMs away from Airport and it takes about 40 minutes to reach by road. People are charged around 700₹ to 1000₹. So when ever you visit Amritsar don’t forget to see these sacred and historical places. Also special transport service is provided by Government from Airport to Golden Temple too for free of cost.
