The iPhone 5 is finally out and analysts agree that Apple will sell millions of its newest smartphone before the year is over. But should you be one of those millions? The answer depends on which old iPhone model you are currently using.
If you are using the iPhone 4 —
The answer would have to be ‘yes’. Get it as soon as your current postpaid contract expires or as soon as you can afford to purchase an open-line unit. There are numerous reasons to do so, and some of them have been listed below.
- You get to use an 8MP camera, which is a significant upgrade over the 5MP camera of the iPhone 4.
- There’s the much-touted Retina display and the “world’s most intuitive touchscreen” to enjoy.
- Your iPhone 4 is aging. Because of that, it’s slowing down and unable to keep up with the requirements of today’s latest games and applications. If you want to enjoy seamless use of your mobile phone and you have a tendency to multitask, you’ll likely suffer fewer headaches with the new iPhone 5, which is powered by A6 technology.
- Do you want to be one of the first lucky individuals to get to enjoy the iOS 6? If so, you can only do that with the iPhone 5.
If you are using the iPhone 4S –
It depends. Most likely, your postpaid contract is still not up yet. You will have to either find someone to give your iPhone to or you need to sell it before you can buy the new iPhone 5. Of course, these options are only being offered on the assumption that you want to be financially practical about your decision. But if money is no object and all you care is about having the best iPhone, then here’s what the newest generation can offer that your iPhone 4S does not have.
- Have you been feeling a little envious about the capability of other devices for taking panoramic photos? Well, you can do so now – and the iPhone 5 can take panoramic shots even with the device positioned upright!
- Do you want a larger screen for reading e-books, playing games, browsing, or for watching your favorite videos? If so, the iPhone 5 offers a longer 4” display without increasing the width of the device. It also happens to be a lot thinner and lighter than the 4S!
- Do you frequently use your 4S for FaceTime? If so, you are probably in the position to enjoy the all-improved front-facing camera of the iPhone 5. It can now capture 1.2MP stills as well as record videos in HD and improved resolution.
- The iPhone 5 can connect to LTE networks, which your iPhone 4S won’t ever be capable of doing – well, not unless you make use of additional devices. But on its own? It’s impossible. LTE connectivity means faster downloading and uploading speeds. However, you should also take into account that LTE access is not as well-distributed as, say, high speed internet service.
In the end, sense and sensibility don’t really come to play. It’s your call. How badly do you want the new iPhone 5?

Aw, this was a nice help on this decision on buying the new iPhone5 or not. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to make a great article but what can I say I hesitate a lot and don’t seem to get anything done. Can you write something about the downsides of the iPhone 5?

I really think that Apple is starting to lose its way a little. Theintroduction of this phone was completely overshadowed by the Maps disaster. Personally, I am going to wait until the Samsung Note 2 comes out – I hope it lives up to my expectations.

Thanks Dave for your honest comment here! The map disaster was really a “no go” for apple and put everything well done into shadows. Apple has to find their Post Jobs image and most important is to keep the high quality and user expectation standard they still have. Interesting is also that Apple recommends now to use the maps from Microsoft, Nokia and Google instead of their own… 😀

I used this phone and I find that the great flexibility and environment was much better than the samsung.

Thanks for commenting Mubashar! I think so too. I am using an iPhone 4 and an Android HTC Desire. Both devices are fully rooted but my iPhone is much more professional than my Android phone. I like the android device for programming simple apps and “player around” with new android features at home, but I use only my iPhone with business customers 😉

iPhone 5 disappointed many when they first saw it had no cool feature like Siri, but it is all round better than the iPhone 4S in my opinion.

The feature that probably will bring the most benefit for iPhone users is the LTE 4G UMTS technology which allows bandwidth up to 100 Mbit/s in download 🙂
