One such research project, undertaken by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, involves the use of large arrays of photovoltaic cells positioned in space. These cells are designed to collect solar energy from space and transmit it back to Earth in the form of microwave radiation. A ground antenna will then convert the microwaves into electricity.
Another project underway at Imperial College London is attempting to create artificial trees and leaves for use as clean fuel sources. Since leaves naturally convert sunlight into energy, replicating this process in artificial trees can provide a source for developing hydrogen- and methanol-based fuels.
Within the building construction industry, the New Energy Technologies Company is developing projects involving solar powered windows. This design converts glass windows into electricity-generating surfaces. The windows are sprayed with a coating that absorbs natural sunlight as well as artificial light produced by fluorescent and LED lighting sources.
