Twitter rolled out new iOS and Android app updates last Thursday. Twitter has vastly improved it services, specifically by improving the functionality of areas such as Discover and Search. Please find the features and changes of the new version here in the following.
Main features of the update include:
- Better search
- Enhanced event support
- In a nutshell, better and multimedia support.
iOS specific changes are:
- A mark all read for DMs
- More options to save or share links in tweets
- Configurable font sizes.
The company’s take on this new and improved app update is that they are focusing on the user. So using Discover now means that you can find the best possible content that is relevant to you. However, you can do this even if you do not know everyone involved in the content you are looking at. The Discover app on mobile devices is similar to the one on Twitter’s website. This new Discover app lets the user find (discover) popular tweets. All you need to do is to simply tap on the View All Tweets button and you will view several of the photos, news and stories that are being posted by people in your network.
Another area which has been updated in the app is the Search area. This has been updated simultaneously on the Web as well. Search now shows video and photo search results right at the top when you view results for a query. What’s more is that Twitter has now included a tailored ranking in the results that you view. This basically means that you will now understand why certain tweets are more relevant or important to you. This is because you will now be aware of who retweeted or favorited it.
Another notable upgrade that the app has is that you can now expand tweets. The advantage of expanded tweets is that you can read articles, play videos or simply use other media resources directly in the tweet. Simply put, you can now view the URL to a video or a story without leaving the app. Unlike earlier when you could just view the link to the story or video. This is available already on the mobile web and internet and it is a clever move by Twitter to add app support in this way.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the new iOS and Android app is the push up notifications feature which are linked to particular accounts. You can now set up a push up notification to sources that you wish to monitor regularly. For instance, you can link up a source and subsequent push up notification for your local news channel.
For both the iOS and Android, the app has either reintroduced or added the following features:
- A notification on the Find Friends feature – the address will be uploaded to Twitter’s server.
- Being able to favorite or retweet something without leaving your timeline.
- A swipe gesture to reply to.
The app adds plenty of multimedia support for the user. Try it out and let me know what you think about it.
